Clients who cannot tolerate or down-regulate a
painful emotion will often manage their feelings through behaviours such as drug
or alcohol use, binge eating, anorexia, self-harm or suicide attempts. In recent

be reduced by coaching alternative functional behaviour.
Three senior
clinicians from the NHS share techniques and experiences that help clients who
have difficulty regulating their emotional responses.
