“Families of Choice”: A research exploration of whether gay men
create their own “Families of Choice”

Dear Colleague
I am a part-time student of the MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy at the University of East London (UEL) doing research on gay men’s experience of sexual orientation in their biological family or alternative family set up (i.e. adoptive family, living with grandparents, care or foster care, or other alternative family environment),

Key aims of the research are:
  • Gay men’s experiences in their biological family or alternative family set up (i.e. adoptive family, living with grandparents, care or foster care, or other alternative family environment)
  • To explore how the family or alternative family environment responded to gay men’s sexual orientation
  • To explore whether gay men as a result of their family or alternative family experience choose to create “Families of Choice” (a “preferred family”) as opposed to replicating or repeating the patterns of the “family” or alternative setting which they grew up in.
I am enquiring if you would be willing to participate in this research project.

Please click here to find a “Research Information Sheet For Participants” which outlines the Research Project in more depth.

If you are interested in participating in the research, please can you email me your name and address by Friday 16th December 2011 and I will post or email you a Research Information Pack

Kind Regards & Many Thanks
