COURSE OUTLINE

AIMS:

Every group has a distinct character and power and is always more than the sum of its individual parts. Facilitating groups can be like journeying without a map – often difficult, intense, challenging and stimulating. Group facilitators can become the receptacle for the group’s negativity and projections. The course aims to illicit each member’s unique ability, and develops their confidence in facilitating therapeutic groups – by exploring with them their ability to use themselves to harness the strength of the group to empower individual members.

CONTENT:

The course will cover the characteristics of group work: tasks, facilitator styles, models, interventions, dynamics and processes, boundaries and inherent difficulties.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course members should have developed:

  • New levels of self awareness in groups
  • An understanding of their unique, personal contribution within groups
  • New skills to facilitate therapeutic groups
  • Ability to identify different roles & dynamics within groups
  • Able to understand stages of group development

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

The course is aimed at counsellors/group workers who want to enhance/learn therapeutic group facilitation skills and existing group facilitators e.g. Support groups, personal development groups, therapy groups. The course follows a Person Centred approach but is open to people trained in other modalities.

TEACHING METHODS:

Experiential learning is a fundamental aspect of this course, which means that the group members facilitate part of each session, so a willingness to participate is essential. Theory will be linked to the use of the self within the group and used to help and explore the group process. Handouts will be given along with a suggested reading list. Students will be encouraged to keep a weekly learning journal.

OUTCOME:

A Certificate in Facilitating Person Centred Therapeutic Groups.

At the end of the course you will be asked to reflect on your learning and highlight your goals. You will also assess your progress with your tutor – feedback from tutors is available during the course if it is needed.
