The HGI’s register is independently accredited in the UK by the Professional Standards Authority – the same organisation that accredits BACP , the National Counselling Society, UKCP and others. Must I have personal counselling or psychotherapy myself to do this course? No.
The human givens model proposes that human beings come into the world with a given set of innate needs, together with innate resources to support them to get those needs met. Physical needs for nutritious food, clean water, air and sleep are obvious, and well understood, because when they are not met people die.
And in 1980, Irvin Yalom defined the four “ givens ” of the human condition —death, meaning, isolation, and freedom—that have become the basis for the field.
Highly practical and forward-focused This is the case even if people have suffered horrific traumatising events and are suffering from flashbacks and/or PTSD – all human givens therapists are taught a safe and reliably effective, evidence-based method for detraumatising people, which in most cases works in one session.
The Rewind Technique is a simple technique for processing traumatic memories and involves an element of exposure. It is best practiced within a formulation-driven approach to the treatment of trauma.
These are truths about the conditions of existing and also of evolving. They are the prerequisites for unfolding with character, purpose, and meaning.
You can apply for registration with the Institute and appear on the public register of human givens therapists only when you have completed Part Three of the HG diploma. Registration assesses applicants’ fitness to practise and requires a series of declarations that you meet the required standards.

It was Yalom who defined the four “ givens ” of the human condition—death, meaning, isolation, and freedom, that have formed the cornerstone of modern-day existential therapy, and a method of psychotherapy that enables clients to face these givens head-on and so move towards living a more “authentic” and free existence .
A few causes of an existential crisis may include: guilt about something. losing a loved one in death, or facing the reality of one’s own death. feeling socially unfulfilled.
Existential psychotherapy is based upon the fundamental belief that all people experience intrapsychic conflict due to their interaction with certain conditions inherent in human existence, which are known as givens. The theories recognize at least four primary existential givens: Freedom and associated responsibility.
