Self-reflection in counselling practices is an action that is based on theories, beliefs and assumptions. All three of these components are drivers toward the understanding of a counsellor to his clients, in guiding them when choosing the most appropriate intervention for their clients .
Reflective practice allows the counsellor to do their job to the highest standards. This self -evaluation is an essential part of the role, and helps them become a better counsellor . Without reflection , the counsellor could become stagnant and loose motivation.
Being able to self – reflect enables a counsellor to identify and develop personal awareness, and to remain emotionally detached from the relationship he/she is developing with a client.

The term use of self in therapy refers specifically to the ways in which the therapist draws upon their own feelings, experiences or personality to enhance the therapeutic process. The therapist must be reflective and reflexive in their approach.
Observing one’s thoughts, feelings, decisions, roles, relationships, and so on, builds self – awareness . Doing this in the presence of a counsellor provides objectivity to the observation. The importance of an objective observer such as a therapist in developing self – awareness is shown in research.
Attending personal therapy brings rich learnings which can be applied in clinical work but can also positively impact learning in the course, and lifelong personal development. The process can enhance the student’s understanding of what the client may experience in the therapeutic journey.
A therapeutic relationship is key where the client feels at ease to share their problems with the counsellor and the counsellor listens, seeks to understand the problems from the client’s point of view (empathy) and gives them the space to explore their feelings, thoughts and behaviours.
