How Long Is Marriage Counseling Before Marriage?

Relationship counseling can last anywhere from a few months (about 10-12 sessions) to a year or longer. Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length, while some therapists use a 75 or 90 minute model for marital therapy sessions if necessary. So much is dependent on the couple, their difficulties, and the counseling style taken by the counselor.

Premarital therapy is usually scheduled for 8-10 weeks before the wedding. The couple and their counselor meet once a week, on average, to discuss their issues. Some couples may want to expedite the process by meeting twice a week for a shorter length of time rather than once a month. Alternatively, if a couple intends to be together for an extended period of time, they may go more slowly.
