Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and deer park with 630 Red and Fallow deer roaming freely since 1637. The deer have played a major role in the park’s history and have shaped the landscape too.
The deer in Richmond Park and Bushy Park are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Our parks are nature reserves and the herds of wild deer roam freely. For your safety, please keep at least 50 metres away from the deer at all times and don’t touch , feed or attempt to photograph the deer at close range.
Sometimes the deer may be injured and some are even killed during the fights for supremacy. There are 2 culls in Richmond Park – the males in February and the females in November. In Bushy Park , however, the male cull takes place in September and the female cull in November.
Richmond Park is a fabulous park that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Overshadowed by its central cousins, Hyde Park and Regents Park , the park in Richmond nonetheless offers visitors an enjoyable nature experience. Nevertheless, this expansive park is still worth the trip .
There are seven well-known wonders of the world, but the folk of Richmond know there is an eighth – the natural wonder that is Richmond Park . Did you know that the pedestrian gates to this stunning space never close? That’s right, the gates are open all night to walkers and cyclists.

Red and fallow deer in Richmond Park and the nearby Bushy Park are killed twice a year – alternating between males and females – to preserve the health of the herd as a whole. “As a result of the cull , the meat is sold to licensed game dealers and all the money is reinvested into caring for our herds.

Grass snakes are present in the park and, although a population estimate has not been conducted, juveniles are seen regularly and they therefore breed well. Like all reptiles they are ‘cold blooded’ which means they cannot regulate their own body temperature.

Another good place to see the water fowl is at Heron Pond. Bushy Park , as well as Richmond Park , is famous for its wild deer which inhabit the park all year round and can be seen walking around freely.
We have no objection to alcoholic drinks , but they must be available free of charge (i.e. not for sale), and for consumption by your guests only. And of course, alcohol must only be made available to persons over the age of 18.
