An occupational therapists job role is to help people of all ages overcome the effects of disability caused by illness, ageing or accident so that they can carry out everyday tasks or occupations. An occupational therapist will consider all of the patient’s needs – physical, psychological, social and environmental.
What is the difference between occupational and physical therapy ? Generally, physical therapists specialize in how the body moves. Occupational therapists are focused on treating things that keep patients from doing daily tasks. These can range from simple tasks to complex job activities.
A mid-career Occupational Therapist ( OT ) with 5-9 years of experience earns an average total compensation of €48,000 based on 7 salaries. An experienced Occupational Therapist ( OT ) with 10-19 years of experience earns an average total compensation of €45,000 based on 6 salaries.
Occupational therapists are health professionals who use occupation and meaningful activities with specific goals to help people of all ages prevent, lessen, or adapt to disabilities. Clinicians treat patients with a variety of disabilities, and help them return to family, work and community life.
In this case occupational health looks to see if there is a known health problem which is making you sick and unable to attend. They will advise management of the situation, and, based on their knowledge of the workplace and you and the work, go on to make recommendations to improve things for both you and the manager.
This pathway would generally take 5 to 5 ½ years (3 years for the undergraduate degree and 2 to 2 ½ years for the master’s program). There may be prerequisite subjects that you must complete in your undergraduate course to be eligible to apply for a master’s program to become an Occupational Therapist .
Occupational Therapists focus on helping patients master the activities of daily living. Physical Therapists focus on helping patients recover range of motion and decrease pain after an injury or illness. The average salary for an OT is $83,200 per year. Th average salary for a PT is $86,850 per year.
So don’t just go the easy route and apply to what may be the “easier” profession, because OT is VERY different than PT and much more psych based because OT’s look at the entire person, where as PT looks more at the injury.
OTA is a dying field . There are NO jobs. If you love OT and have some flexibility about getting a job maybe go ahead. If you need to be able to support yourself or a family, I would look at other fields.
However, OTs have a salary in many settings such as a hospital, where RNs do not. RNs can work overtime and get time and 1/2 and make $100,000 if they work overtime a lot. OTs can also make more by working in contract positions on top of their regular job, or in private practice.
Highest paying OT jobs According to WebPT’s OT Salary Guide, research and development (which can be considered non-clinical), home health , and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) offer the highest pay to OTs.
Being an occupational therapist can be stressful. Almost every setting has productivity requirements, with some settings less strict than others. So while you do get to provide meaningful treatments and help people achieve their goals, you do have to deal with the struggle of meeting your productivity on a daily basis.
